Code of Conduct for Mentors and Staff
Standing to represent FlowState Divers, whether as a mentor, staff member, or anyone else operating under our name, is a responsibility extended to individuals we trust to uphold everything else in this document - not a title held independently of the conduct that earns it. The expectations below apply to every mentor and staff member, regardless of tenure, region, or role.
Honesty in Assessment
Safety Before Convenience
No training proceeds where a mentor knows, or reasonably should know, that conditions, equipment, or a diver's readiness do not meet the standards this document sets out. Schedule pressure, travel already booked, a diver's disappointment, or a fee already paid are never acceptable reasons to proceed with a dive that shouldn't happen. A mentor is expected to postpone, restructure, or decline a session rather than compromise on this, without exception.
Respecting the Diver's Judgement
A diver's right to refuse a dive, raised elsewhere in this document, is respected without pressure, persuasion, or subtle discouragement. A mentor who talks a hesitant diver into proceeding anyway - even gently, even with good intentions - has undermined exactly the judgement this training exists to build.
Professional Conduct
Mentors and staff conduct themselves professionally in every interaction connected to FlowState Divers - with divers, with the public, with industry peers, and with one another. This includes:
- Treating every diver with respect, regardless of their current skill level, pace of progress, or how challenging a particular session has been.
- Delivering honest feedback directly and constructively, without contempt, ridicule, or unnecessary harshness. Honesty and unkindness are not the same thing, and this document asks for the former without licence for the latter.
- Representing FlowState Divers accurately - never overstating a diver's readiness, a programme's outcomes, or one's own credentials to a diver, a partner, or the public.
Conflicts of Interest
Where a mentor's personal relationship with a diver, a financial interest, or any other circumstance could reasonably compromise the honesty of an assessment or the fairness of a decision, that conflict is disclosed rather than quietly managed alone. FlowState Divers would rather know about a conflict and address it than discover it after a determination has already been shaped by it.
Confidentiality
Internal communications among mentors and staff - discussion of candidates, complaints, evaluations, or organisational matters conducted through official FlowState Divers channels - remain confidential. A mentor who allows these discussions to become public knowledge, deliberately or through carelessness, is subject to the disciplinary process set out elsewhere in this document.
Exclusivity Requirement, But No Conflicting Representation
Mentors teach exclusively for FlowState Divers. Anyone who commits to mentoring within the FlowState Divers system may not teach or instruct for any other scuba diving training organisation. This is not about loyalty or competition. It protects the highest possible instructional standard for our students. Our certification-free philosophy and our training standards ask for full, undivided commitment. A mentor who moves between systems brings competing methods, habits, and expectations back into our water, whether they mean to or not. A mentor cannot credibly hold our standard in one context while teaching someone else's in another, so we ask for exclusivity outright.
Fitness to Mentor
A mentor is expected to maintain their own diving competency, physical fitness, and professional judgement to a standard consistent with what they are asking of the divers they train. A mentor who has let their own fundamentals lapse is not positioned to credibly hold anyone else to them.
Accountability
Every mentor and staff member is bound by the complaint, investigation, and appeal processes set out in this document, without exception for seniority, reputation, or length of service. No one operating under the FlowState Divers name is above the standard they are responsible for upholding in others.
