Development Process Overview
The Process Is Sequential
Each stage of candidacy assumes the one before it has been genuinely completed, not simply attempted. A candidate does not move into pedagogical development before their own in-water and cognitive mastery of the curriculum has been confirmed, and a candidate does not receive final evaluation before they have demonstrated readiness through every earlier stage of the process. This ordering exists for the same reason every prerequisite chain in this document exists: skipping ahead does not produce a shortcut, it produces a gap that surfaces later, at a worse time - and for a mentor, that gap is inherited by every diver they go on to train.
What the Process Confirms, Broadly
Across its stages, the development process is built to confirm three things about a candidate, in sequence: that they can genuinely excel at the material itself, that they can teach it to someone else effectively and humanely, and that this capability holds up under sustained observation rather than a single strong showing. Exactly how each of these is confirmed varies by curriculum and tier, and is detailed in the curriculum-specific sections of this document rather than repeated here.
Endorsement and Final Ratification
Progression through candidacy culminates in formal endorsement by appropriately credentialed FlowState Divers personnel, and final ratification before a candidate is placed in active standing. Ratification includes ensuring all candidate development documentation has been properly completed and submitted, confirming that candidate-specific requirements such as insurance and qualification are in order, and the submission of a signed mentor agreement and standards agreement, along with the appropriate fee.
The Process Adapts, the Standard Does Not
The specific structure of how candidacy is delivered - the pacing, the format, the tools used to observe and evaluate a candidate along the way - is something FlowState Divers continues to refine as our methods evolve. What does not change is the underlying commitment this page exists to state: no one begins teaching under the FlowState Divers name until they have genuinely proven themselves capable of it, confirmed by people independent of their own candidacy, held to the same rigour this document asks of every diver who trains with us.
